20 HP. SCUTTLE ISOLATION.

We thank you for your BY/Cgh{W Clough}15/G.11.8.26. re the above.

Although the original instruction for the semi-isolated scuttle & dash still stands,it is seldom used by the coachbuilder. The years of past experience have proved that in practice on production cars the scheme has been the cause of an excessive number of complaints of noisy cars, scuttle booms, engine noises in the body, and cracked scuttles. Because we have been unable to offer the coachbuilder any means of curing the trouble he has had to take the matter in his own hands. In general two methods of complete isolation have been in use for over two years by the leading coachbuilders.

(1) The column and instrument board is carried on the brackets whilst the board is entirely free from the scuttle.
(2) The instrument board is carried on the scuttle only. The off-side bracket only is used solely to support the column.

Neither scheme was a success although No. 2 was the better. We therefore anticipate that when we introduce the sterring column steadied with tubes as standard, a number of owners having cars treated by the coachbuilder's methods will wish to have the R-R Scheme fitted. Also, as may be seen from L.H.S.7/EBN9.7.26 it is essential that the steadied column be introduced as soon as possible. We therefore suggest that it would be possibly advisableto make the steady tubes for the XXX small diameter column to enable us to put right existimg cars in customer's hands when needs be, and also put the feature on all cars not yet through the works.
