ORIGINAL TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET. R2/M14. 3. 24. X.9490 X.9230 X.9080 E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. ENGINE. It is quite evident we must have a better exhaust, silencer, and cutout system, especially for the early EACs. I have already suggested a very long silencer and cutout as on Goshawk. This work should be transferred to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} because DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} has so much other work, and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} would take the engine through to the end if he were to do radiator and exhaust system. A cutout is useful for extra power and noise, and for testing if the exhaust is slowing the car through getting choked in the perforations, and other tests such as carburation, and it has been decided that we must fit one. Certainly we ought to work the exhaust cutout without having gaps in the footboard that will let in dirty air etc. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} will get out a design for this also. I have remarked elsewhere if suction noises are troublesome, fit the silencer on carburetter like Goshawk, which was not adopted. of carburetter modifications E's drawing/- LeC.1841. - to hand; this seems now quite good and simple. Do you think it should be arranged for silencer as in previous paragraph? R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
