Re: BENTLEY 50. SPECIFICATION AND PROGRAMME.
--------------------------------------------

Referring to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/R.4.3.38, the third paragraph:-

(a) New Gear Box.

The details of the box will be completed by the end of this week ( March 12th.)
Before that time, all the designs will be issued, including the clutch casing and the parts of the gearbox attached to it, except that the end of the 3rd. motion shaft and the universal joint flange are rather tied up with the box detail and may follow the completion of that by a day or two.

The remaining details of the mechanism not yet issued are promised for a fortnight from now, so that it looks as though the complete box can be completed in detail in a fortnight, March 19th. This may not include the detail of the clutch casing which may be a few days later.

(b) Pressed steel dashboard.

The drawing of the actual pressing will be completed today or tomorrow. A scheme has to be made of the attachment of the dash to the frame, which may take a week ( March 12th.) and there is also a scheme to shew the coachbuilders how to construct the floorboards on the body. This may take another fortnight, bringing it to about March 28th. before the design is complete or the eve of this month, but the pieces are not long distance pieces either to detail or make, and are mostly not wanted until the body is in Derby.

(c) Bonnet with Raised Sides.

This is awaiting the completion of the frontal appearance and radiator, which should be completed by March 16th. This would make the bonnet design completed by about March 30th. which should be in ample time, as the pieces are not long distance.

(d) Altered front appearance.

As last paragraph including the radiator scheme.

From the above, it looks as though the gearbox was still the longest job, as the pattern may take from 6 to 8 weeks, 23rd.April to 7th.May. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}
