Phantom III - Rubber Body Mounting.

Whilst the present system of rubber body mounting in use on Phantom III may be made to work satisfactorily provided the tension in the bolts is controlled, we feel that the efficacy of the mounting in preventing tyre noise is dependent upon the Coach-builder using intelligence when bolting down the body. We are, therefore, inclined to anticipate wide variations between cars.

We would prefer to place the rubber somewhere between the body bracket and the chassis, so that the Coachbuilder, as far as he knows, bolts the body solid to the fittings we provide for him on our chassis. We could then determine the desired degree of flexibility which we require at each body bracket and know that we should obtain it consistently.

The ordinary Silent Travel bush fitted horizontally and as used now as standard for mounting Bentley bodies by Messrs. Park Ward & Co., comes into this category, but Messrs. Andre Silent Bloc Ltd. would prefer the use of Flotex Anti Vibration mountings, as the rubber is used in shear.

On LeC 5102 herewith, we show a scheme of Flotex mounting for the Phantom III, in which the Flotex bushes are fitted to existing body brackets. On the first five body brackets on each side we use the type 'P', and on the last three type 'F'.

We have placed the Flotex unit on the underside of the bracket so that during tests on various degrees of hardness of rubber it will be possible to withdraw the units without lifting the body.

We show two types of unit; in the main scheme we show the special Flotex bush with reverse loading rubber, in which case we use units PE.10615 and SE.11327. In the case of the smaller unit PE.10615 we shall have to ask the Makers to supply this bush with the alternative
