X.2628. RE GREASING OF SPRINGS.

With reference to your memo H1/TB11.3.20., complaining that the wedge supplied in our Tool Kit is ineffective as regards opening the leaves in order to grease the springs. We have given one our boys' in the Experimental shop the job of greasing the springs and he has been able to do it without any help by means of the tools supplied in the kit.

The chief point is to make certain that the Frame is jacked up to a good height so that there is no load at all on the springs. We agree that the strong screw claw device would make the job easier but we doubt whether the Designing Staff could spare the time to work on it.

Mr. Royce is still against springs being greased but he realises, if the springs squeak, this must be done.

We are endeavouring to make springs so that they will not squeak. When we have achieved this, greasing the springs should be abandoned.
