C O P Y. To J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} " " Na.{Mr Nadin} " " Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} for EH. / 71015 R5/IB61015. October 6th.1915. Re Car 58NA.{Mr Nadin} During our recent experience with the above car, we believe we have thrown some little light on the petrol consumption in question by finding a distinct gain due to the lowering of the level in the jet. We have also had some experience with the starter which teaches us that it would be better for the starter to be worked by a single press button which has to be held on all the time the starter motor is required to run. This is in accordance with Mr Hives' experience and suggestion, and decreases slightly the complication, in fact the starter as it stands now is not complicated when compared with other starters, such as the Delco. We have also found out that the press button oxidises with the sparking on the contacts, which might in time cause a failure. This can best be cured by either using large pointed platinum/contacts, or better still by contacts of carbon and copper, and we have redesigned both the press and the main switch suitable for this change to the system. These two pieces have been sent to Derby to be made and fitted to the starters that are already in hand, and it is intended that they shall replace the previous ones at once and be tested by making up a few odd ones before the 15 sets of starters are | ||
