W/P. To Sr/VA. from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux}5/MH.{M. Huckerby}13.1.39. Thank you for your letter VA/5.ET.11.1.39, confirming our telephone conversation on Wednesday morning last. Herewith full story of job done at Chateauroux. Chauffeur entered our Garage and informed us that his dynamo would not charge. We asked why he had come to us and he replied that the Hotel de France had sent him. We explained that we were not a Service Station and were not acquainted with his model. He replied that he was aware that ours was a Test Depot and not a Service Station. We agreed to do what we could for him, but could offer no guarantee for our work. On leaving he offered payment which we refused again emphasising that we were not an official Service Station and merely helping him out of a difficulty. Examination revealed that the field fuse had blown and that the triangular resistance had burnt out. A new fuse fitted immediately burnt out. A new element was made for the triangular resistance out of an old ignition ballast resistance. The fuse, however, continued to blow. A heavier capacity fuse was fitted and the dynamo then charged in a normal manner and the cut-out worked correctly. We therefore sent the chauffeur on his way. We are sorry that the dynamo subsequently burnt out. Whilst the heavy capacity fuse failed to protect the machine, there is no doubt that the cause of the trouble lies elsewhere, possibly a faulty connection in the circuit to the battery. Thanking you for your kind regards which are fully reciprocated. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} | ||
