Dear Sirs,

In reply to your letter of 29th. Dec., we enclose drawing N.Sch.5039 which shows the use of the "Gaco" bush.

When the brakes are applied during forward running the lever A is lifted and the slotted link B falls. On release the lever A would fall until the pin C hit the bottom of the slot of the slotted link were it not for the rubber bush, which thus absorbs the click. In reverse braking the bush is compressed and the pin C carries the load.

The reason for the failure of the "Gaco" rubber was that it was too hard (durometer 85) and therefore failed to compress and carried the reverse brake load itself. An additional reason for the failure was that it was badly moulded and had a plane of weakness across which it split.

We have obtained every satisfaction from "Neoprene" rubbers, durometer 40-45, not moulded, and costing half your figure. Naturally, these two considerations, price and satisfaction, have influenced us in favour of the "Neoprene" rubbers, which have therefore been instructed for production.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
