1210 To:- All Officials at Derby and Crewe. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/DK.9.9.40. Crewe Material Office. It has been decided that the time has come when the production in the Crewe factory is so large as to require an independent organisation for scheduling delivery of raw materials. Mr.I.A.Leslie will be in charge of this department at Crewe. He will be referred to as JM{Mr Morley}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} The existing Order Office Staff at Crewe will come under his control. Mr.Pursall will be second in charge of this department. Orders for the Crewe factory will still be placed at Derby, but according to delivery schedules supplied by Crewe. No diversion of Crewe supplies will be permitted without the agreement of JM{Mr Morley}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} JM{Mr Morley}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} has authority to obtain material or partly fabricated pieces from alternate sources of supply, subject to technical agreement from Derby, and in collaboration with the Derby Order Office, when supplies from the Derby Order Office can be anticipated to fall short of requirements. JM{Mr Morley}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} will be responsible for supplying Derby Order Office with statements of material required to replace scrap made at Crewe or by sub-contractors. Where new sources of supply are found Crewe can indicate, for future production sanctions, the source they prefer, based on deliveries, quality and price. In view of the National shortage of alloy steels and other materials, there must be no attempt at any Rolls-Royce factory to build surplus stocks. We always expect Rolls-Royce Derby, Crewe and Glasgow and their sub-contractors to pool available material. There will be a meeting held at Derby once a month to discuss outstanding problems in connection with production programmes, and supplies of material for production engines, spares and installation fittings.
