re 18-EX.

Referring to the above and the special publicity which it was arranged PN{Mr Northey} should obtain for us with the above car, I am pleased to hear that he gave a very satisfactory run, and that the person in question was very favourably impressed with the car.

At the same time I am sorry to hear that certain items which PN{Mr Northey} tells me he had specially asked should receive special attention had not been dealt with prior to the car being sent up. I refer in particular to:-

(1) Coachwork rattles to be taken out;
(2) Speedometer to be set at 5% on the optimum side in order to avoid risk of it giving slow reading; and
(3) The steering to be arranged so that it would be equally as good as 21-EX after it had been adjusted at Chateauroux and PN{Mr Northey} had it in France.

It was, of course, very difficult to get anything done on a Saturday afternoon, but I understand that Wyman was able to obtain and fit the necessary washers to increase the loading of the side steering tube in order to correct the severe wandering tendency of the steering when the car arrived in London.

In regard to the speedometer, this, instead of being 5% on the optimistic side was, I understand, 3% slow, and it does seem a great pity that we should let any of our cars have speedometers on the slow side. You will remember that we have had to point out the same thing on one or two other cars which have come up for us to try recently, and in giving a publicity demonstration run I am sure you will appreciate the importance of this point.
