1620 a.{Mr Adams} 17th September 1937 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews}1/AP. The Rover Motor Car Co., New Meteor Works, COVENTRY For the attention of Mr.J.Swaine Dear Sirs, In answer to your letter of the 15th, we have sent the material along for you to try in the normal way with thrust faces formed by the bearing material, particularly since this appears to be your usual practice. In order to use the strip material you would possibly have had to widen the connecting rod big end to make up for the material removed in deleting the thrust faces, we did not know whether you were prepared to do this and the safest plan appeared to be to let you fit them in your normal way, in which case existing rods could be machined to give an adequate thickness of bearing material to form a reliable thrust bearing. The strip bearing has proved to be quite successful but we have hadconsiderably more experience with the more convential type of bearing. In using the strip bearing the shims and ends of the bearing have to be machined in such a way as to form a location for sideways movement of the bearing and also to prevent it rotating in the rod. We are pleased to hear that you are going to drill the crankshaft as suggested there should be no difficulty, the hole from the journal is quite a reasonable size and the meeting holes are comparatively small. If there are any other queries please do not hesitate to write and when you are ready for test the writer will be pleased to run over to Coventry should you require any help. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
