Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Sirs,
We wish to acknowledge receipt of the Aluminium-Tin Alloy Bearings, and RR.56 material for Shims, as advised in your letter of the 13th instant.

We presume that you intend us to machine these Bearings to provide thrust faces for the connecting rod big end; but we should like your views upon the alternative arrangement, wherein the bearing consists of a plain shell, and the thrust is taken upon the steel end faces of the big end. We have found this latter arrangement satisfactory when using thin steel backed white metal bearings.

With regard to the crankshaft, we have not, at the time of writing, actually drilled one as suggested. This matter is well in hand, however, and we do not anticipate any great difficulty in producing such a shaft for experimental purposes, but we do not at present regard it as a satisfactory proposition for production.

We propose to hold the Brinell of the experimental shaft at between 245 and 270.

Yours faithfully,
THE ROVER COMPANY LIMITED
