-22f- Contd. This method of charging is rather uneconomical and should only be used if it is found by experience that the conditions of running are such that a greater demand is made on the battery than can be replaced by the dynamo. Another point to watch in using this method is that the battery is on the low potential side of the supply mains in relation to the lamps, as otherwise, owing to the chassis system being an earthed one, the whole body of the chassis may be raised to a dangerous potential in relation to the earth. Unless one has experience in these matters, it is advisable either to put this in other hands, or to remove battery from chassis for the extra charge. Use of Starter. Careless use of the starter will reduce the life of the battery. Careful use of the starter will make very little difference in the life of the battery as compared with the more ordinary lighting demands. If the battery is known to be well up in its state of charge the starter may be used for several times in immediate succession with the certain knowledge that the battery is not being appreciably injured. If at any time the starter appears sluggish in its action and such sluggishness is traceable to the battery, do not attempt to make further use of the starter until the battery has had a thoroughly good charge and is brought up again to the gassing condition. If the battery is in good condition it will turn the engine easily. If it will not turn the Contd. R.R. 235A (500 T) (S.D. '808' 28-4-17) Bm. 2/156/13. | ||
