on the 10,000 miles test and in view of the unreliability of these pumps and the helplessness of the driver in case of such a failure he suggested we should consider the use of two electric petrol pumps instead.

The idea was approved and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will arrange with E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} a suitable location for the electric pumps for trial.

4. Item 19 on Bentley Agenda. General position:-
(a) Engine Gear Rattles.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said that he had demonstrated to him a very bad case of engine gear rattles when picking up from 17 to 18 miles per hour under load. He said that he had now issued a scheme for trial with a view to eliminating this defect.

EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} said that the chief grumble regarding engine gear timing rattles is when the engine is idling.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} said that one of the things which is being tried with a view to eliminating gear rattles is Fabroil gears and the results up to date have been very good. He said, however, he had received a shock when Rn.{Mr Robinson} informed him that Fabroil gears are apt to break up in use.

Delivery. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} here mentioned that as C. required an approximate date for the commencement of delivery of Bentley chassis he thought that it was wise to say deliveries should not be expected until January next in order to give a little time for the elimination of such troubles as gear rattles and faulty petrol pumps.

5. Not on Agenda. Tank Engines for Poland.

Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} read memo F.11/JL.2.6.35. regarding a request from Vickers for a quotation for Phantom engines for installation in tanks. It was agreed that we should go in for this work, and that the comparatively small amount of design work which is necessary to adapt the engine should be proceeded with.

Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} said that we could deliver three engines per week commencing in 4 months' time.

6. Item 6 on General Chassis Agenda. Controllable Shock Dampers. P.II.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reported that he has issued a standardisation sheet for Tele Control for Continental P.II. chassis. He said that he really preferred the R.W. Hydraulic Hand Control operated from the steering column, and he wished to press for its adoption although it is not yet standardised.
