Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X2924 CHASSIS. MINUTES OF CONFERENCE AT DERBY ON FRIDAY AUGUST 4th 1933 TO DISCUSS CHASSIS MATTERS. Present:- W.O.C. C.H. Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} En. P. Sft.{Mr Swift} Nw.{N. Walker - Patents} Ry. Minute No. 1. W.O.C. opened by saying that before proceeding with the Agenda he would read to the Conference a memorandum - reference Hsl/M.2.8.33. written by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} giving his views on the present position regarding chassis design and development. The memo was then discussed at some length and numerous suggestions were made for the accelerating of design and development work. A suggestion was also made that we should purchase one or two foreign cars for investigation purposes, and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} was requested to look into this matter and make definite recommendations. 2. Item 2 on Bentley Agenda. Flywheel Fixing. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} said that the flywheel which had come loose on a test chassis was, in his opinion, due to defective locking of the nuts. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} also stated that if the Bentley engines are run at the critical speed flywheels may always be liable to become loose and instructions should be given that engines must not be run at the critical speed. He stated that he had in hand special valve springs which will have a floating speed below the critical speed of the crankshaft with a view to eliminating the danger of damage being caused by over-speeding the engines. 3. Item 3 on Bentley Agenda. Report on first Production Chassis. The report on the first production chassis was raised with a view to settling the question of parts which will hold up production after the first 10 chassis. The items mentioned by Sft.{Mr Swift} were:- 1. Flywheel fixing as affecting crankshaft drilling. 2. Dashboard Drilling. 3. Radiator, stone guard and apron. 4. Front axle with quick brake adjustment.
