P.II. BRAKES.

We are sending you a pair of front brake drums that have done 16,000 miles on Mr.Horlick's car. They illustrate a trouble that frequently crops up on both the front and rear brakes, though the former usually suffer the most.

Lake & Elliotts, who are constantly in touch with the high speed bus and lorry problems, are emphatic that breaking up the surface of the lining with numerous rivet holes aggravates drum scoring, and utilise alternative methods of fixing.

The last 10,000 miles test shewed that the Cast Iron drums have improved the situation, but we have had cases where even these have been badly grooved.

It is interesting to note that Bentleys found that about 120 sq.in of lining/ton was necessary to avoid trouble, though of course they had to cater for a somewhat different clientel.
