78430 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} (Struck through) Gp. EX. (Struck through) Gp. HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} (Struck through) C. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy{William Hardy}2/W.22.4.25. S E C R E T. E.A.C. V SERIES. STEERING COLUMN FLANGE. ----------- BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has raised the objection that fitting the stiffener shown on N. scheme 1980 will be difficult. It is necessary with pot brazing that clearances should be very close to retain the metal, and the variation that occurs in the pressing sizes will make an awkward fitting job of the stiffener. To simplify the fitting, we propose to cut the flange off the pressing, and strengthen the forged flange as shown on N.scheme 1982 herewith, and braze it to the pressing as before. We think that were N. scheme 1980 used without brazing, it would be necessary to machine the pressing flange where held down by the forging, and serious weakening of the flange might occur.
