48430 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy.{William Hardy} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET 'EAC' STEERING. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy{William Hardy}1/LG20.4.25. It appears that the EAC. efficiency test figures given in our letter DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy{William Hardy}1/LG18.4.25. were for the whitemetal lined nut, and with the box supported on the engine side in addition to the frame support. Tests on the road with the same steering box and nut show up the superiority of this box and our impression is that the whitemetal nut has improved with use. We are accordingly going to test an EAC. box with the bronze nut to determine whether its efficiency is inferior to that of the whitemetal nut. We shall also, as soon as possible, test the efficiency of the Hispano Suiza box. Should this efficiency prove to be good, we shall suspect that it is probably due to the larger area of contact of the worm and to the whitemetal lined nut, since the other features of the box do not point to good efficiency. We hope to have a box with roller bearings and whitemetal nut ready for test very shortly. hgw DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy.{William Hardy} | ||
