X.3441. RE. CHANGING OF CROSS STEERING TUBES.
As you are aware, we are changing cross steering tubes on all chassis from 1100 and onwards.
We learn from one of our Inspectors, Capt. Burt, that he has visited chassis 789 and finds the cross steering tube is in bad condition, and we recommend that it should certainly be changed at once.
Although our instructions are strictly to the effect that chassis of 1100 only are to be changed, we take it there is no alternative but to have the cross steering tube changed on this chassis.
Capt. Burt in his report writes as follows :-
"One is tempted to suggest that special note of this point should be kept, and if another case comes to light we should re-consider the policy of replacing rods only as far back as "1100 type".
We submit this to you for your perusal.
