40/50 H.P. WATER PUMP ROTOR. V3472

Excessive wear on the water pump rotor and bushes is a very common complaint on the 40/50.

It has also been the cause of a frequent complaint on the 'Eagle' aero engines. Recent investigations on the 'Eagle' aero engine pumps have proved that the excessive wear is caused by either out-of-balance of the rotor or the fact that with the cast shrouded rotor the outlets for the water from the rotor vary in size which causes further side pressure on the bushes.

As you are aware, Springfield have altered their water pump in order to reduce the wear. They are using, we believe, stainless steel spindle with a cast rotor peg and soldered on.

We consider that the built-up rotor similar to that used on the 'Condor' engine makes by far the best type of rotor.

We attach a blue print showing a rotor of this design applied to a 40/50 pump. If it is successful, then of course, the casting would be altered so that it would not be necessary to add the loose shrouds.

We should like to have your approval to carry on with the tests of this.
