R.R. 235A (100 T.) S.H. 788. 10-12-20. (c) 2947 X4264 To K from DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Dr. c. to E.O. X4264 RE GOSHAWK II - STEERING COLUMN. We send herewith drawings of the steering column for Goshawk II, which has been increased as compared with Goshawk I, so as to make it about .85 of the 40/50. We have also carried out some modifications which were instructed by you on my last visit to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town. "N" Scheme 766 shews the upper portion of the column, the wheel, and thrust bearing. The wheel is 16 1/2" diameter. At 4 and 5 we shew notches on the inside of the wheel, 5 being similar to the present standard, while 4 is on the lines of the sketch shewn on Mr Elliott's instruction. With reference to the column tubes, the stationary tube on the Goshawk is made solid, but as this seems rather expensive, we have shewn at 3 the end brazed on as an alternative. The wheel is shewn held on by a nut and taper, in accordance with your instructions, and at Fig 2 we shew the taper portion brazed on instead of being solid with the tube. There is a little difficulty in locking the nut holding on the wheel, and we have shewn alternative schemes namely, a serrated nut, and a locking wire, and at Fig 6 a locking plate. We have also shewn a proposal for locking by means of a small set screw with differential holes. "N" Scheme 774 shews the gear box itself, from which we have removed the original support, the new proposal being shewn on other drawings. (Contd). | ||
