Phantom III Engine Oil Filling.

Referring to the Daily Report on 35-EX of the 14th inst. there is a complaint that when filling the engine when it is cold the oil gauge lags behind.

If this is considered important it might be worth while making an experiment in which the baffles are carved away. However in doing this we must keep in mind that the features and baffles in the sump were a matter of development to overcome various early defects in the bottom half of the crankcase.

It might be helpful if we review why these features were introduced. All of them with the object of preventing the oil pump orifice from being uncovered.

(1) The oil trap doors were put in to keep the oil back when braking.

(2) The oil tray compartment at the rear was to cater for accelerating in bottom gear.

(3) The longitudinal baffle was made to overcome loss of pressure when cornering.

(4) The sketch shows the circuitous path the oil has to take when filling the sump. If thinner oils are introduced then probably it will be found that the job can remain as it stands.
