(1) I like much better the filter cast on the body - i.e. not the separate standpipe.

(2) I fear we must not trust to the air and oil pressure tightness of the gland, and I think the spring load one is hardly practical. This will soon prove itself in the design, or test. Perhaps the best is the screwed one.

(3) The filter might be as sketch below. This seems simple and gets rid of some of the awkward features.

Say 3/8" hole.
On this plug slides a small brass casting, on the outside of which is soldered the gauze of the filter.
Sunken hexagon to fit outside of box key.
Simple to make, clean, or throw away; dirt comes out with plug.
