TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ORIGINAL PHANTOM SUSPENSION. [Handwritten annotations: X5410 (crossed out), X.884-0, X5410] We have had a long note from R.{Sir Henry Royce} about this, of which you will get your copy in due course. He appears to have gone somewhat on the lines that we were thinking of, namely, a difference in the balance between the three chassis, that is, the Silver Ghost, the 20HP., and the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I. A preliminary investigation which we made here did not seem to confirm that there was any great difference fundamentally between the 20HP., and the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I. The centre of gravity seemed disposed in approximately the same place along the wheelbase and above the ground, and the rating of the springs both front and rear is very similar. If anything the 20HP. front springs are rather more flexible. This somewhat brought us to the conclusion that there was not much hope of an explanation being found along these lines, but in view of what R.{Sir Henry Royce} says we propose to take the matter up again. In doing it, it is of course rather necessary to have fairly accurate weights, and though we have a good many, we do not seem to have all of them. The weights of the back axles is something we have not got, the weight of the new PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I gearbox is another, and we have not separate weights of for instance, the frame, dashboard, and fittings, and steering gear. We wonder whether this information would be sufficiently easy to get to make it worth while. With reference to R's suggeston that I should go to Derby perhaps you would tell me when there is a car complained of available and I will come up. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
