through the engine, probably too strong but forms an explosive gas in the silencer. It is a fact that the opening of the induction pipe cock on the retard accentuates the trouble.

This trouble chiefly happens after the engine has been running at pretty high speeds under full power conditions such as one gets by ascending a hill, and then allowed to retard, that is, decending the hill.

The question of petrol being in the induction pipe has also been previously demonstrated by other tests, after accelerating and then retarding, the engine governs better by setting the carburetter while engine is retarding temporary weak. Under these conditions the engine fires immediately the throttle opens, but soon commences to fail until the carburetter is again set normal.
