To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rn.{Mr Robinson}

F.11. [Handwritten: X4657]

We thought you might be interested to know the general progress of this engine.

We are preparing to fit stronger cyl. holding down bolts to all high compression engines. At the same time we are pushing on with the bench test of this modification.

We are conducting tests to ascertain whether the F.10. will suffer from building up when the oil temp. rises.

We have run a geared engine on the hangar about 20 hrs. and so far have experienced no oil leaks or signs of failure from the gear.

The Air Ministry have demanded another 15 high compression engines out of the 25 we are supplying, but it is obvious that we cannot accede to their request until we have had more experience with high compression.

All the low compression engines are being made 6 to 1 piston ratio. I believe previously you were asking for 6.4 compression ratio. Personally, we cannot see that there will be a big demand for low compression engines once the [handwritten: constructors] have experienced the benefit of high compression.

We have had some A.M. people up to discuss alloys that will withstand the intense heat from high compression and pre-ignition that we experience on high comp: engines. They are apparently having some success with 'Y' metal alloy [handwritten: castings].

The production of the 25 engines appears to be going exceptionally well and they should start coming through at the end of the month.

The timing gears on 10-EX car rattled so badly that we decided to get them right before letting BJ. try the car. It is therefore at present held up.

We have had more or less incessant rain this last two or three days. We trust you are more fortunate.
