X.430. COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL MAGNETOS.

2.9.24.

(1) The weight of the magneto complete but without pulley, shall be taken.

(2) Some general remarks with regard to mechanical and electrical details of design, more particularly those in which the magneto differs from standard practice, shall be made. This applies only to those details which may be observed without disturbing the armature and magnets of the magneto.

(3) The length of the high tension safety gap shall be measured.

(4) The primary point gap, contact breaker timing in maker's fully retarded and fully advanced positions shall be obtained, making use of a graduated disc placed upon the magneto shaft, and the range and make ratio estimated therefrom.

(5) The amounts of advance range, both hand and automatic, if the machine is fitted with the latter, shall now be determined.

If the machine is fitted with automatic advance, the automatic advance characteristic shall be experimentally determined.

(6) The magneto shall now be subjected to a short endurance test in which the magneto shall be run for 7 hours at a speed of 2000 r.p.m. with timing lever fully advanced (hand range), sparking being caused to take place on a sequence
