of H.T. third point spark gaps in air, set to 5.5 mm.

(7) Immediately following the above, the magneto shall be subjected to a short circuit test in which it is run at 1500 r.p.m. for half an hour with timing lever central (in the case of no automatic advance) and timing lever retarded (hand range) in the case of automatic advance, and primary and secondary windings short circuited, i.e., with the low tension and central high tension distributor terminals connected to the metal framework of the magneto.

(8) Immediately following, the magneto shall be subjected to an open circuit test at 1500 r.p.m. for quarter of an hour, with timing lever fully advanced (hand range), and the high tension terminals not connected to anything, so that the secondary spark discharges take place on the safety gap of the magneto.

(9) If considered desirable, the open circuit volt-speed curve of the primary winding shall now be obtained, making use of a suitable A.C. instrument.

(10) Also, if desired, the closed circuit primary ampere-speed curve shall be obtained, making use of a moving iron A.C. instrument reading up to about 5 amperes.

(11) The magneto shall now be subjected to utility tests, i.e. tests to find out its capability of producing a spark under adverse, e.g. leaky, sparking plug conditions. For this purpose two Remy 12 cylinder coils shall be used and connected across one of the six gaps in the following sequence:-
