LONDON. S.W.1.

(For the attention of Mr. Rushton)

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter of November 7th.

The present position seems to us to be as follows:-

After about 2 1/2 years experimental work, we succeeded in making the Delco-Remy Distributor behave satisfactorily on our engines. To do this we had to fit a spring drive and, incidentally, we decided that, as a result of failures, we preferred to use Tufnol rubbing blocks.

Having arrived at this state of affairs, all we are asking you is to give us the same product which we standardised.

The cam which proved satisfactory had a Brinell of over 400. We have taken the brinell of 8 cams selected at random from production, and have obtained the following figures:-

217, 321, 204, 347, 420, 350, 180 and 341.

We cannot see that any useful purpose would be served by reverting to the original rubbing block in order to minimise variation in hardness of the cam.

At the moment we are not prepared to depart from the distributor specification which we standardised, and we do not think it is unreasonable to ask you to work to this specification.
