FAILURES OF P.III STEERING ROLLERS.

We have been investigating the failures of the roller bearings in P.III steering roller followers, and have now reached some conclusions.

We give below a list of the failures which have occurred to date with a summary of the evidence, and our conclusions in each case.

Chassis, Owner & Mileage.
Remarks.

(1) 32-EX on French test, 12,500 miles.
Some rollers crushed - others O.K. Inner and outer races in good condition. Depth of case-hardening on inner races 0.040. Failure attributed to accident in which front hub cap was hit by hub cap of car proceeding in opposite direction. Wheels were found to be toed out ¼" after accident.

(2) 3.BU.96, A.{Mr Adams} Hartley. 10,000 miles.
Some rollers crushed, others chipped at ends. Inner races badly worn. Parts now lost so cannot check depth of case-hardening, but owing to worn condition of inner races and chipped ends of rollers assume case-hardening was too thin.

(3) 3.BU.94. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} de Villeroy. 5,828 miles.
Some rollers crushed others chipped at ends. Both inner races badly worn. Depth of case-hardening 0.025. Failure attributed to insufficient case-hardening.

(4) 3.AX.175. 11,370 miles.
No rollers crushed but all in one cage chipped at ends. Corresponding inner race very badly worn. Depth of case-hardening 0.020. Failure due to insufficient case-hardening.
