STANDARDISATION SHEET 12.6.30.
No. 7580
5580

I have refrained from signing this sheet until I had available the opinions of all the officials connected with the Inspection Department in respect of each of the 11 items which it is proposed might be deleted from the original kit.

There is considerable diversity of opinion, but I think that we should be fairly safe in taking the majority-view in respect of each item.

The attached memo H.1/H.26.6.30 gives an indication as to the views held.

With regard to 1. and 2. I feel there is no doubt that until we have achieved more success in connection with the prevention of brake-squeak, we should give facilities for the removal of front and rear hubs from the pivots, and not only does this mean retaining the tools under 1 & 2, but in addition, providing wheel-drawers in connection with them.

The result based on the Inspection Department's views is that Nos. 1, 2, 7, 10, and 11 be retained. I am in personal agreement with this except that I do not consider No. 7., i.e. the Hydrometer need be supplied. I think it better for an owner periodically to make good the level of the acid in his batteries with distilled water, and to keep the battery reasonably charged. This condition should be a fairly reliable way of dealing with the battery over a period of say 5,000 miles when the car is likely to be in one of our Depots, and the specific gravity should then be carefully checked. By this means an unpleasant, dirty and unsuitable job, entailing messing about with acid, would be taken out of the hands of most of the owners or their drivers.
