VISIT TO WEST WITTERINGHenry Royce's home town.

We endeavoured to go down and see R.{Sir Henry Royce} at W.W. last week but we had a message from Miss Aubin to say that he was not very well and she would prefer if we could put off the visit. We have spoken to her on the telephone this afternoon and arranged for Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and myself to go down to W.W. on Thursday. Miss Aubin said that R.{Sir Henry Royce} would be pleased to see us.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is away on holiday this week so that it is doubtful whether he will go.

As arranged, the items we propose taking up with R.{Sir Henry Royce} are -

(1) To fit up the Bensport car with J.1 engine.
(2) That the design of the 12 cyl. engine shall allow for the engine to be either 3 or 3.25" bore.
(3) That we must have control of the shock dampers on our cars without waiting for the final automatic hydraulic controls.

We have not written to R.{Sir Henry Royce} because as he was not working we are certain that we should do more good by going down to discuss the points with him.

We do not think we shall have any difficulty as regards points (1) and (2). As regards point (3) we are not satisfied in our own minds that the proposal to use the scheme as fitted to 19-G4. is desirable. Your criticism of 19-G4. scheme that there was insufficient damping in the maximum position, this is due to flexibility of the parts in this design of shock absorber. If we attempt to put the loads up on the shock absorbers we shall possibly have failures.

The alternative is to take the latest shock absorber and do away with the automatic hydraulic controls and operate the adjustment the same as we did on 19-G4. with positive rods and hand control. The advantage of this is that the shock absorber parts are much stronger and stiffer and we can get a bigger range of adjustment safely. This same shock absorber will be used on the Peregrine and therefore the tests which are run on the Peregrine will prove out the shock absorber for the 25 HP.

If we go ahead with the scheme as fitted to 19-G4. the time we get it on the cars would be late into next year, we should be very dissatisfied with it and we should be producing Peregrines with the improved type.
