OUR REF. B/IR YOUR REF. 30th November 1936. Messrs. Rolls Royce Limited, Experimental Dept., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of W.A.Robotham Esq. You will remember that on the occasion of my last visit, I mentioned to Mr.Matthews and your goodself recent experimental work we had done on modifying our skirt form in order to produce the greater measure of oil control from this source, as distinct from that effected by ring design. It was agreed that we should prepare a set of pistons having this modified skirt form, for you to try for yourselves, and the object of this communication is to advise you that these are being despatched to you to-day - a set of six, having normal compression and scraper rings, but being distinguishable by having the number R.85386 stamped on the crown. The object of this skirt form is to give a complete contact round the open end of the skirt when hot, and although it is possible to make a fiarly accurate estimate of the variation in ovality necessary to achieve this, as in the case of the ordinary ovality, we may not always get the best | ||
