Bevel Gears. X.1308..X.3612. 7-CA has been running during the last 4 or 5 years with Gleason spiral bevel gears in the back axle. The axle right from the start was fairly noisy, more noisy than we should pass. The noise, however, was different to the ordinary bevel, i.e. it did not "howl" picking up full load but was noisy all the time including rolling. The gears have not got any better with running. It was noticed before these gears were fitted to the axle that the finish on the gear teeth was very poor. The gears were quieter than we expected from the appearance of the teeth. Altogether, 3 sets of these gears were obtained, those in 7-CA are the best of the three. We notice that the spiral bevel gears are coming very widely into use and an American Officer who was visiting the works stated that all bevel back axle in America were being fitted with this type of gear because of the improvement in silence. We suggest that Mr. Nadin and Mr. Olley might obtain for us some more of these gears which are a good finish to suit our axle.
