On 6.EX the side filler was fitted, and I quite agree that it is absolutely necessary to increase the ventilation so as to allow the better escape of the air. There was no difficulty in making an air-tight joint on the side filler, but the cap as made is much too heavy. The fitting appears to require some more sheetmetal work to reinforce it to the tank end, which deflects with any rough handling of the funnel or nozzle.

On removing the cap the air blew back a considerable amount of dirt from the gauze which was found on the face of the washer which makes the air-tight joint. This might be the cause of the joint not giving satisfaction.

I should be glad if we could see a way of arranging a certain amount of escape of air to take place before the main cap is screwed off.

The reinforcing of the tank, the fitting of the better ventilating pipe as recently suggested, the spigotting of the loose cap as recently suggested, lightening the large brass cap, which should run down freely to a definite stop (by hand) and the improved form of head to the central screw to give more weight on the joint should be tried once more.

Some modification to the length or angle of the nozzle might be found advantageous, as it is a
Contd.
