To HY{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}/RD. from EFC. c. HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} X3573 EFC4/T25.10.28. BAKELAQUE INSULATION. We have now completed our tests of the sample bakelaque insulation which you submitted to us, in comparison with the standard continental material which we use. We find that on the leakage tests of high pressure at temperatures ranging from 20° to 100°, the bakelaque shews up at least as good as, if not slightly better than, the continental bakelite. It also shews up slightly better on the breakdown voltages, though this is not of much consequence. The characteristics in which the bakelaque material is not quite as good as the continental bakelite are the mechanical characteristics, such as punching and machining. The bakelaque material leaves rather more ragged edges. We are of the opinion that these test results are favourable for obtaining further supplies of cloth base bakelaque of suitable thicknesses for incorporating in units on experimental cars in order that shrinkage and other characteristics may be ascertained before its adoption as standard.
