| Y236 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} c.c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} re Bensport Piston. We send you herewith - LeC.3493 showing an experimental piston for the above chassis. Will you please make one set as soon as possible for test. It will be noticed in this design that the vertical split does not run right out at the bottom of the skirt, but connects with a horizontal sawcut about 1.250" from the bottom. The idea is that the complete band of metal at the bottom of the piston will limit the deflection of the tongues formed by this new method of splitting. This piston can only be used with the extended cylinder barrels to LeC.3475, since with this design on no account must the lower horizontal split run out at the bottom of the stroke.
