1110 RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Smth. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Smth.4/AP.19.12.36. BORG & BECK CLUTCHES. Except for the setting of the operating fingers, we have been able to eliminate all the criticisms directed towards the Borg & Beck Clutch, without involving ourselves in any extra work, and with a price increase of only 5d. per clutch. These criticisms have covered finish, truth of outer diameter, accuracy of location of fixing holes, variability of thickness of driven plate, and out of flatness of the cover face and pressure ring face. With regard to finger setting, we have had to accept that Borg & Beck cannot be relied upon to produce the degree of accuracy we require, and we have arranged that we should make the adjustment here. This arrangement has involved Messrs Borg & Beck in the extra cost of castellating the eyebolt nuts and jig drilling the eyebolt pin holes, which they estimate at about 1/- per clutch. The price of the clutch will be unchanged however, as they will save the labour of making the final setting and will not have to correct rejected clutches. It will take a man about 3/4 of an hour to make the setting at R.R., but this will not be entirely extra to the old process, since the setting operation will be part of the inspection which is necessary in any case. The new arrangement gives us the additional advantage of making it easy to re-adjust the clutch after considerable use. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Smth. | ||
