STEERING WORMS.

We have been considering for some time the possibility of deleting the oil grooves in the worm.

It will be recollected that these were introduced when the manufacture of the nut and worm had not reached their present state of perfection.

Recently we have experimentally been running a worm on a 40/50 HP. car without oil grooves in it. The resultant steering is undoubtedly the best that we have on any experimental car, being absolutely immune from all tendency to stick or tighten up, the complaint which the oil grooves were originally brought in to eliminate.

We understand that 6 oil grooves have been tried on test recently without appreciable benefit over the standard being detected.

We consider that, inview of these results, a dozen worms without oil grooves should be passed through production and their behaviour on test ascertained.
