X.3179 C O P Y. Air Board Office, Strand. W.C.2 X.3179 August 24th.-17. T.3. Room 364. Gentlemen, I am much obliged for the copy of the pamphlet about the Upton Lewis Testing Machine, which I have read with interest. I have also discussed it with Dr. Rosenhein and Professor Edwards and we all concur in the opinion that the results given by this machine have nothing to do with fatigue in the sense in which that is generally used (in connection with Wohler tests, etc.) but that the results will be proportional to the elongation of the steel. The tests applied by the Upton Lewis Machine are approximately the same as the tests which we have introduced into a number of Air Board Specifications which we call the reverse bending test. It is in use at wire makers works and was introduced to take the place of the elongation measurement which is not practicable in wires or thin sheets. The Upton Lewis Machine could only be used for fatigue tests if the number of reversals was increased to about a million, which would be a very laborious business. Lieut. Aitchison informs me that you have made preliminary conductivity tests on some of the alloys you recently reported on. If the results are available I should be much obliged if you would let me have a copy. I refer to aluminium alloys. X. 3176. Yours truly, (Sgd) C.F. Jenkin. Lieut. Cmdr. R.N.A.S Have you this information, if so please send it on to Lieut. Cmdr. Jenkin. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Nightingale Road, DERBY. | ||
