RE NO. 4. GOSHAWK TAPPETS. X4226
On readjusting the tappets of this engine I was very disappointed in the lasting qualities of the parts.
The hexagons of the nut and screw were not hardened, they were too small in depth for long life and the spanner did not fit them. I am not surprised to hear that one worked loose in practice.
This must be made a much better job - correct to size, and the spanners provided must also be correct to size. The depth of the hexagon should be increased in the nut at least.
I found 3 spanners for which we were responsible all very slack (possibly nuts much undersize) and one of which I closed up by hammering together cold. This was the one for the 5/16 check nut.
With good fitting spanners and good hexagons, the work should be quite easy to carry out with precision.
R.{Sir Henry Royce}
