New Unit for C.W.H. in France.

Hancock now reports that in addition to the trouble he has had with his big end bearings, his main bearings are beginning to break up. In any case of course it is very unsatisfactory to continue running a strip lead bronze bearing on a soft shaft. We therefore wish to send him out a new unit, so that he can return the one he is at present using, for re-conditioning.

We are allotting B-4-A unit, which was removed from Bentley I car, for this job. Into this unit we should like to fit -

(1) The crankshaft slipper wheel, flywheel and connecting rods as instructed in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}18/KW.13.5.35.

(2) The strip connecting rod bearings thickened up by .025" and the rods bored out to suit, as specified in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smth.11/KW.28.5.35 attached. We have come to the conclusion that if the rods are clearly marked which way round they are to be fitted, it is unnecessary to make two tabs. We do not in any case like fitting two tabs, as it removes the major portion of the bearing surface from the joint face of the rod.

(3) Textolite gears running on ground steel gears, if these are available.

(4) Lightened Aerolite pistons, to be supplied by Matthews. It should be ascertained that the bores are in good condition before these pistons are fitted.

As the Borg & Beck clutch will require a specially modified clutch shaft, it may be thought desirable to send this unit over complete with its own gearbox. Alternatively, we can send the shaft and bearing housing over and let Hancock change them himself.

The larger slipper wheel will require a special extension to the wheelcase. If the wheelcase is going to materially delay the job we shall have to fit a standard slipper wheel.

This unit is somewhat urgent, as we do not anticipate that Hancock's bearings will last much longer.
