Dear Mr. Robotham, Further to our letter of the 6th, we have now had an opportunity of obtaining the information which you call for in your letter of the 2nd. In reference to the tool cost of our heavy type passenger gearbox, this reached a figure of approximately £150 for material and wages, but not including design. Your presumption that there is a considerable saving of time in foundry work when making die castings as against sand castings is correct. The cost of die casting (including die casting and dressing) works out at about one quarter the cost of sand casting, the latter being based on the wages for moulding, core making and dressing. We would point out that die casters and die casting dressers are paid at a less rate than core makers, moulders and sand casting dressers. In addition to the direct saving in labour, there is also considerable saving in foundry material, such as sand, etc. We trust that the above information meets your requirements, and would ask you to consider this as being strictly confidential.
