Proposed dashboard stiffener for the New Phantom steering gear to improve rigidity and steady the steering column.

Herewith we send N.sch.2174 shewing the proposed stiffener for the R.H. side of the dashboard to assist in steadying the steering column. On looking into the matter we abandoned the idea of going on to the frame in front of the dashboard, and have shewn the stiffener attached to the same bolts as the dash bracket, but we have found it necessary to alter the latter as that shewn on the 'W' series dashboard arrangement seems sufficient in heel and may be one of the reasons for the apparent lank of stiffness of the present dashboard. We hope that the dashboards that are now being used are more like the arrangement on Mr. Royce's 7-EX car, where the bolts are quarter square headed, and there is a good heel on the dash bracket flange. As arranged the stiffener is less conspicuous than the original suggestion, and we think the fact that it calls for a new dash bracket is justified by this improvement. It will be noticed that we have shewn stiffeners at the front and rear end of the dash bracket inside the frame. It appears possible that some mxx of the flexibility of the present system is due to the frame flange being bent up and down, and we should be much obliged if Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} would test if possible the amount of this deflection. It will be evident that dashboards of the type used on 7-EX only require the existing vertical stiffeners somewhat deepening to effect this improvement without addition pieces.
