-4- Transmission. S.S. Gearbox weight (with clutch case) 101 lbs. 2¼ ozs. Bentley. Gearbox weight (with clutch case) 103 lbs. 2¾ ozs. The R.H. change speed mechanism on the Bentley is the largest increase in weight on the Bentley gearbox over the S.S. It weighs 6 lbs. 5½ ozs. against 1 lb. 9½ ozs. The alum gearbox case on the Bentley is only 12 ozs. lighter than the cast iron one on the S.S. This is, of course, because of its increased size, to accomodate the servo etc. Fuel and Exhaust Systems. S.S. weight 104 lbs. 12½ ozs. Bentley weight 99 lbs. 11¾ ozs. Fuel System S.S. 40 lbs. 7¼ ozs. Bentley 45 lbs. 12¾ ozs. Exh. System S.S. 64 lbs. 5½ ozs. Bentley 53 lbs. 15½ ozs. The S.S. petrol tank has a capacity of 14 galls., compared with 18 galls. on the Bentley, and weighs 31 lbs. 10 ozs. against 38 lbs. The S.S. has a duplex exhaust system, with four silencers, as opposed to the single system with three silencer boxes on the Bentley. Steering Mechanism (with side steering tube). S.S. weight 47 lbs. 15½ ozs. Bentley weight 50 lbs. 13¾ ozs. The controls on steering column weigh 6 lbs. 3 ozs. on the Bentley, and 2 lbs. 11 ozs. on the S.S. Wheels and Tyres. S.S. weight (4 wheels, tyres & wheel nuts) 217lbs. 2ozs. Bentley weight ( " " " " " ) 221lbs. 14ozs. The wheels and tyres on both cars are 5.50 x 18. The Bentley wheels do, however, incorporate lead balance weights, which would account for their slight increase in weight. | ||
