To Rg.{Mr Rowledge} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/JH.6.10.39. BOREAS. I see from Nixon's report of his latest visit to the U.S.A. that Wrights & Pratt & Whitneys are now both using cylinder fins of 2 1/4" depth and 5 1/2 to the inch and are contemplating and have cast fins of similar pitch having a depth of 3". It is not worth while endeavouring to develop some sort of cast cylinder for the Boreas in view of our present exceptional foundry and laboratory facilities. We have in mind that the Boreas cylinder and sleeve will possibly be a basis unit for commercial engines after the war when £'s. as well as lbs. per H.P. will be the deciding factor.
