(2) In conclusion I believe the above arrangement will avoid the two remaining faults of the semi-jamming in the engagement, and the thump at the final engagement. It is understood that the 20° angle will carry itself along the shaft after the engagement is made by the solenoid, and we can use the more recent arrangement of contact maker which only puts the main switch in when the pinion is nearly home. With the 58° original arrangement of contact maker by the actuating solenoid should be fitted. We certainly think that the 58° is the wrong angle for the purpose, and that the 45°, which we will return to you by this same post, might be tested while you are waiting for the new parts. Owing to the crush between the starter motor, and the exhaust pipe we have decided to put the starter motor in a different position entirely on KAC.7., and it will be carried on the clutch casing. Much of the drawing has been done for this arrangement, and we hope in a little while to give you the final plan. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
