TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Mr. Coverley, RG.{Mr Rowledge} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} ORIGINAL VALVE SEAT DRIVER & WITHDRAW TOOL. Copy to BJ. WCR. The one shewn on your sketch does not seem very satisfactory for many reasons: better design would be thus - Collet might slip on here, but keyed washer shewn should prevent this. Only tighten sufficient to prevent slipping. Collet about 3". Sleeve in here to make up length to bring nut & handle outside cylinder. Keyed washer. This tool should have been designed by Mr. Willis. Use slipping tap driver to give the correct degree of screwing up. To get dia. of thread correct degree of tightness. BUT it is better to screw in by broached serrations which can be left in unless tests shew loss of power. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} says .025 deep X .100 wide - i.e. .2 pitch gives 24 teeth, thus - Simple accurately fitting driver would avoid the difficulty of expanding the seating by the use of an expanding collet driver.
