The changes made between the 2nd. and 3rd. tests were. (a) The second cross-member was tack welded by gas to the side members where the original electrical tack welding had been faulty. (b) The side member boxing was tack welded by gas to the side members for about 12" ahead of the cruciform. Both top and bottom faces were done. The effect of these changes was to reduce the stiffness of the frame slightly (see attached graph). It is thought that the reason for this is that gas welding always causes some buckling of the surfaces. For this reason we do not want it on production.
