Instructions for removing a leather wiper from the pinion unit of a starter motor on car 18-EX.

With reference to your report about the failure of the starter motor on 18-EX, we think this may be due to the presence of a leather wiper in the pinion unit. We would like you to take this out and try the tests again when you can find time.

EFC's instructions for removing the wiper are as follows:-

Remove nut securing pinion.
Withdraw pinion from armature splines.
The leather wiper should come away with the pinion, and may then be disassociated from the pinion.
The pinion may now be replaced, notice being taken that the spring is correctly replaced. Care should also be taken to replace all the washers under the pinion nut, as upon the thickness of these washers depends the correct setting of the relation of pinion to wheel.
